Phoenix Fataneh Nik-Khakian spent a year conducting research for a documentary film about prostitution and trafficking. She interviewed more than 30 people including experts, prostitutes, people with experience of prostitution and sex buyers in Sweden and Germany. The results were reported in the book Prostitution – Ett fritt valt yrke? En annorlunda rapport. (Prostitution – A freely chosen profession? An unusual report). The book was presented along with a photo exhibition on the same theme at the University of Gotland during Almedalen Political Week in 2010. The photo exhibition was also shown in connection with the 2011 International Women’s Day event at the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm.
The report was published in collaboration with the Swedish National Association of Women’s Shelters, SKR, an umbrella organization of women’s shelters, associations for family members of victims of domestic violence and other associations that aim to counter men’s violence against women. SKR later changed its name to Unizon.
